ropeburgee The 2008 Social Programme:

Graham has put together another interesting and varied Social Programme including a number of prestigious speakers as shown below. Further details will be posted here and in the Newsletters when available.

  • 7 January - Tom Cunliffe with a talk entitled “From Grandfather's pocket watch to the chart plotter” Tom says that the illustrated talk is a friendly and irreverent look at the changes many of us have seen from the days when I found Barbados after 42 days at sea with no chart at all – just a lat/long to shoot for, a sextant and my grandfather's pocket watch –  to my current PC-driven chart plotter that still manages to lead me astray.
  • 4 February - John Wright with a talk entitled “Lock Keeping on the Thames”. John has been associated with the river for 33 years and a lock keeper for 11 years. He is currently the Lock Keeper at Penton Hook Lock between Chertsey and Staines.
  • 22 February - Spring Dance from 20:00 at St. Swithun’s Parish Centre, Yateley with Gillie and the Blues Babes. Tickets from Graham at £12.50 including a hot meal.  Guests are welcome to come along for what promises to be an entertaining evening.
  • 3 March - A return visit from the Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS).  They visited us in June 2006 with details of their free marine rescue cover in the Solent. This talk will cover some different aspects of the service
  • 7 April - Captain Ray Blair, Southampton’s Deputy Harbour Master with a talk entitled "A happy mix of maritime trade and leisure?" covering the development of the port, the problems currently faced and the way ahead. Ray will give a bit of background on the Harbour Master's Department and provide a little advice for the leisure user of Southampton Water and The Solent as a whole.
  • 12 May - Nigel Jardine with a talk entitled “Great Expectations - the role of the Harbour Authority”.  Nigel is Harbour Manager of Langstone Harbour Board and gives an an overview of the Board's powers/legal obligations and compare these with the expectations/preconceptions of harbour users over a range of harbour activities (not as dull as it sounds!)
  • 2 June - We are hosting the annual Quiz Night with Reading Offshore Club at the Centre Bar - “kick-off” 20:00. Prizes for the winners of teams of 4 in a Sailing Quiz and a General Knowledge quiz (for those not too hot on sailing). Come along to a convivial evening to support YOSC and meet our fellow sailors from Reading
